There. I fixed it.

A couple weeks ago, I was doing laps at Autoclub Speedway chasing Eric Bostrom.  On one of the laps I noticed a large piece of debris on the track. As I approached it at full throttle, I noticed that it was the rear cowl on MY BIKE! Yikes!

Somehow, it must have come off with all the windspeed and vibration. Also, probably from me sliding my butt around as I lean into the turns.

The tabs underneath with holes to pass threaded studs have snapped off. I drilled out holes in the cowl and in the seat so that I can Zip-tie them. Classy, I know.

But hey, it worked!  And it is better than the studs.  It’s not going anywhere.

I think I’m going to leave the scratchs in on the cowl.  It adds character. 🙂

Trackday Training with Eric Bostrom – Autoclub Speedway

IJune-25-2016-Fastrack Riders - Level 2 - Grid - ACS_7641_Jun2516_by_BR-CaliPhoto a had the best experience at Autoclub Speedway (June 25, 2016).    I had 1-1 training with the one-and-only Eric Bostrom.  I learned a lot of stuff.  Mainly riding position and letting go of fear. I kept going faster and faster.

Interesting to note that he also made pointers regarding the way the SportClassic likes to be ridden.

He called it the “tractor” effect.  I refer to it as Mario Kart. (lol)  shoot style of naviagting through turns.

The bike was performing flawless.

I also was fortunate enough to have former racer John Hilton there.  His approach was different but nonetheless, valuable. I had a 2-for-1 that day!

Bostrom said that the SportClassic is a neutral bike, so enter the turn fast, lean it over, maintain speed to keep tires planted deep, and accellerate as you go through.  Seems kinda contradictory but it worked!

Best of all, I had my dad and great freinds there to support me!

Willow Spring Raceway

That’s Big Willow to you, sir.

Everything moved like clockwork.  Got up, attached the pre-loaded trailer to the truck and off I went to Rosamond.  Skies we perfectly clear and zero wind.  Temperature peaked in the low 80’s which made for perfect track conditions.  I got there before the crowd and tech’d the bike in 2 minutes.  TrackDaz were the hosts.

I watched a couple of YouTube videos of Willow Springs to memorize the track and lines better but what I didn’t anticipate was Turn 6.  Holy cow.  It felt like you were racing down a steep diagonal  – while leaning hard – while short shifting up – at full throttle – all while the outside of the turn looks like an infinity pool!  If you’re not focused, you are going off the track and into an event horizon.

Then there was Turn 8 and Turn 9, collectively called The Sweeper.  You were wondering if it was ever going to end.

We did encounter many delays because people were crashing out a lot. The two ambulances could not keep up with taking people to the hospital. (yikes)  All of the crashes were occurring within the first 1/2 lap of a given session.  This means that the yahoos didn’t allow the tires to warm up, thus crashing out. (tisk tisk)

After Darwin weeded out the hooligans in the morning, we were able to enjoy an uninterrupted track day all the way ’till 5pm.

I was also able to finally track-test my Brembo Goldline front caliper conversion with sintered EBC pads.  They performed beautifully.  Excellent braking.

I’ve got tons of photos from a photographer friend (Ron Sinoy) and from the track’s CaliPhotography.

Willow Springs is very different from many other tracks.  It’s layout facilitates very high speeds where others have many turns and odd corners.

It is definitely deserves the title of the “Fastest Road in the West“.

That  –  was  –  fun.

Brakes Upgrade

I’m currently in winter hibernation mode and ready to work on upgrading my stock Brembo calipers to the Brembo Goldlines. This is a 2 piston to 4 piston axial caliper conversion.  This caliper comes off a Ducati 748/996/998.

The stock master cylinder should work fine and after lots of research, these Brembo Goldlines should bolt right up nicely after I remove 4mm off the mounting bosses so that the caliper lines up with the rotors.  The Alpina rim’s spokes clear the back of the calipers.

Braking will substantially be significantly stronger (not that it wasn’t already) and modulation should be very nice, too.

The inspiration came from riding a KTM 1190 cc RC8-R on the track with radial mounted monobloc 4-piston/4-pad calipers. Dual rotors at 320mm.  Sick braking but too “digital” for me. The goal for these brakes is somewhere in between.

With these calipers, I should be close to the KTM but smoother.  🙂

Malibu – Pt. Magu

Headed out bright and early Saturday morning (Aug 15) to Malibu and the Rock Store via Las Flores Rd / Mulholland Hwy / Yerba Buena.  Awesome ride.  Small mishap by one of us boys where we low-sided in gravel at a turnout trying to stop.  DOH!  No personal injuries but the bike scratched its fairing. Very minor.

Not much in the way of photos this time but definately memorable.

Summer 09 SF Coast Ride – Report

That was fun!

DAY 1
The first day was pretty tough since I woke up about 3:30am to drive up the coast with the bike on the trailer.  Arrived in Watsonville, checked in, and met up with four others that wanted to go down to Big Sur.

Once in Big Sur, we waited to for the rest of the gang coming from the LA area to ride past us.  Shook hands, filled up with gas, and a big group of 12+ SportClassics roared up the California coastline to Santa Cruz.  We parked our bikes right at the boardwalk and had a few drinks at the bar and had dinner. It was absolutely great to put a face to the names!

DAY 2
Woke up early and rested.  Headed back to Santa Cruz for a huge group phot0.

We then split up into two groups.  Group A went on a loop around the Redwood forest to world famous Alice’s Restaurant on Skyline Hwy.  We then continued the drinking at the Santa Cruz boardwalk. Group B went to Fort Bragg in the north, spent the night, and came back the next day.

DAY 3
I packed up the trailer, loaded the bike and went home.

It was a great time had by all.  Hope to see them all again.

A short video I made of the trip.
